Rooted in Conservation, Growing for the Future

Wyoming’s urban and community forestry program helps communities build effective, self-sustaining urban forestry and tree care programs.

What’s an urban forest?

Great question! An urban forest (also called a community forest) encompasses all the shrubs, ground cover, soil, wildlife, water bodies, and trees in and around a city, town, or village, in places like:

  • Along streets
  • Home landscapes
  • Parks
  • School yards
  • Stream banks
  • Utility rights-of-way
  • Vacant lots

What is urban forestry?

As Wyoming’s urban and community forestry team, it’s our job to manage our state’s urban and community forests, as well as their related natural resources… and the relationship of those natural resources to the human world.

By fostering partnerships between government agencies, businesses, and volunteers to promote and improve community forests throughout the state, we’re helping manage Wyoming’s urban and community forests in ways that reduce conflicts and allow both human development and the natural world to enhance and benefit each other.

To do that, we provide leadership and technical assistance to communities and organizations throughout the state, including tree inventories, management plans, tree care recommendations and workshops, and grants for local urban and community forestry development.

Are you an Urban and community forestry professional, tree care specialist, or green industry leader?

Join us at the Wyoming Tree Academy!

The Wyoming Tree Academy brings together municipal arborists, private tree care professionals, researchers, and educators for a multi-day event packed with practical training, cutting-edge science, and inspiring keynote presentations.

(Check out our Program Scholarship Cost-Share grant, which can be used to cover your cost to attend the Academy.)

Co-hosted by the Wyoming State Forestry Division (WSFD) and the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture (RMC-ISA), the Academy offers a dynamic blend of hands-on workshops, expert-led sessions, and networking opportunities designed to advance knowledge, share innovations, and strengthen the tree care community across the region.

Whether you're a seasoned forester or just beginning your career in arboriculture, the Wyoming Tree Academy provides the tools, connections, and inspiration to grow. You’ll gain insights into topics ranging from species diversity and climate resilience, to tree risk assessment, plant health care, and urban wood utilization.

Join us in cultivating stronger communities through healthy, resilient urban forests! Contact your district office for details about joining us at this year’s event.

Nominate your community for “Tree City USA” recognition

Founded in 1976, the Tree City USA program celebrates towns and cities committed to growing their urban canopy.

Currently, Wyoming is the proud home of more than 30 designated “Tree City USA” communities, with many celebrating this recognition for 30 years or more.

To be recognized as a Tree City USA, your city or community must meet Tree City USA standards and submit an online application before Wyoming’s state due date of January 16.

For questions about meeting eligibility requirements or completing the application, contact Urban & Community Forestry Program Manager Jacob Mares at (307) 777-3626 or via email.
