The Wyoming State Forestry Division (WSFD) provides wildland fire training for fire departments throughout the state and maintains the Incident Qualification System (IQS): The software database that manages and generates Red Card credentials, which qualifies a person to fight wildland fire with a federal agency or on federal land.
See upcoming training opportunities in the "Related Links" section, or find out how to earn your Red Card below.
Wyoming Red Card Qualifications and Training
All firefighters assigned to an incident managed by a federal agency—including the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Wildland Fire Service, National Park Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs, or U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and many state agencies—are required to have a Red Card.
The Red Card functions similar to a driver’s license, showing that the cardholder has completed all course work, training, and on-the-job performance required to hold a particular position.
For questions regarding instructor or student requirements, please reference PMS-310-1 and PMS 901.1.

How to Get a Red Card

Step 1
Join a fire department and/or locate a sponsor to complete your basic training, such as a local fire department, fire protection district, or county.
If you’ve been previously Red Carded by another State or agency, please tell the local Fire Chief or County Fire Warden you'll be joining, so they can apply for you to get carded here in Wyoming.

Step 2
Complete the National Wildfire Coordinating Group Basic Firefighter course (S-130), the Introduction to Fire Behavior course (S-190), Human Factors on the Fireline (L-180), and online courses through FEMA, such as Introduction to ICS and NIMS (IS-100/IS-700).
In addition to classroom and field training, you must pass a strenuous physical work-capacity test to prove you’re able to perform physically arduous tasks in the field.

Step 3
Have your County Fire Warden, Fire Chief, or Training Officer submit this person master record form to the Wyoming State Forestry Division.
Your Red Card will be emailed to your assigned Fire Department when the application is approved. Once you’ve received your Red Card, your sponsoring fire department or agency may list you as an available resource with the fire department or agency. This means you may be dispatched to wildfires as they occur and as the department or agency needs your assistance.
